Transporting engine

The Transporting engine is the most elaborate piece of machinery constructed by the Lilliputians during Lemuel Gulliver's captivity, a wooden frame on twenty-two wheels designed to move a being they called the "man-mountain" from the coast to the capital. Its creation and operation reveal the Lilliputians' advanced mechanical abilities, the emperor's absolute command over resources, and the absurdity of a miniature state attempting to control a giant through engineering. The engine is a physical manifestation of the power dynamics between Gulliver and his captors, and its construction is one of the earliest and most detailed examples of the Lilliputians' reliance on mathematics and mechanics to solve problems of scale.

Construction and Design

The engine was built by five hundred carpenters and engineers who were set to work immediately after Gulliver's landing. It was a frame of wood raised three inches from the ground, about seven feet long and four feet wide, moving upon twenty-two wheels. The Lilliputians were excellent mathematicians and had arrived at a great perfection in mechanics, encouraged by the emperor, who was a renowned patron of learning. The prince himself had several machines fixed on wheels for the carriage of trees and other great weights, and he often built his largest men-of-war, some nine feet long, in the woods where the timber grew, having them carried on these engines three or four hundred yards to the sea. The transporting engine was the greatest they had, and it set out in four hours after Gulliver's landing.

The Process of Loading

The principal difficulty was raising and placing Gulliver into the vehicle. Eighty poles, each one foot high, were erected for this purpose. Very strong cords, of the bigness of packthread, were fastened by hooks to many bandages which the workmen had girt round Gulliver's neck, hands, body, and legs. Nine hundred of the strongest men were employed to draw up these cords by many pulleys fastened on the poles, and in less than three hours, Gulliver was raised and slung into the engine and tied fast. All this was performed while Gulliver lay in a profound sleep, induced by a soporiferous medicine that had been mingled into the hogsheads of wine he drank upon his arrival.

The Journey to Mildendo

Fifteen hundred of the emperor's largest horses, each about four inches and a half high, were employed to draw the engine towards the metropolis, which was half a mile distant. The journey began, and about four hours later, Gulliver was awakened by a ridiculous accident: two or three young natives climbed up into the engine, and an officer in the guards put the sharp end of his half-pike a good way up into Gulliver's left nostril, which tickled his nose like a straw and made him sneeze violently. The party made a long march the remaining part of the day and rested at night with five hundred guards on each side of Gulliver, half with torches and half with bows and arrows, ready to shoot him if he should offer to stir. The next morning at sunrise they continued their march and arrived within two hundred yards of the city gates about noon, where the emperor and all his court came out to meet them.

Narrative and Thematic Significance

The transporting engine is a key object in the satire of political power and technological control. It demonstrates how the Lilliputians, despite their diminutive size, use their mathematical and mechanical skills to exert authority over a being vastly larger than themselves. The engine is also a symbol of the emperor's logistical power, as he commands the resources of the entire kingdom to build and operate it. The absurdity of the situation—a giant being transported by a tiny machine pulled by tiny horses—underscores the theme of relativity that runs throughout the book. The engine is also a precursor to other mechanical contrivances in the story, such as the machine used to carry Gulliver's hat and the various devices used to search his pockets, all of which highlight the Lilliputians' ingenuity and their obsession with measurement and control.
