Alisher's father was a devona—a holy fool or ascetic—who traveled from Central Asia to Moscow as a courier for the Light. Disguised in an old-fashioned dark suit and carrying a string bag with a melon, he was intercepted in the underpass of Kazan Station by three Dark Ones. Despite killing Kolya with an invisible shield of raging wind, he was drained of life energy by Alisa using a prism of power, his body desiccated and crumbled to dust. The briefcase he carried contained only ordinary clothes and a polystyrene cup of noodles; the real cargo—the Chalk of Destiny—was never found by the Day Watch. Alisher, traveling separately in a first-class sleeper car, had already taken the artifact and evaded detection. He presents the oblong bundle of coarse fabric to Gesar in the restaurant, and Gesar covers Alisher's hand with his own, taking the chalk and declaring "Your service is completed, Alisher."
