The Abandonment

The Abandonment The Unwilling Mother Sanaubar is a beautiful but scandalous woman. She marries her cousin Ali, but she despises his appearance. When Hassan is born with a cleft lip, she laughs and refuses to hold him. Five days later, she runs off with a band of traveling singers and dancers. The Life of a Wanderer Sanaubar disappears for decades. She lives a hard life. Eventually, she is attacked and her face is slashed with a knife, leaving her disfigured. She loses an eye. She decides to return to her son. The Return In 1990, Sanaubar appears at the gate of Baba's house in Kabul. She is toothless, scarred, and weak. Hassan takes her in without question. He nurses her back to health. She becomes a devoted grandmother to Sohrab, sewing his clothes and playing with him. She dies peacefully a few years later, having found redemption in her grandson's love.
