Childhood Companions The First Words Amir's first word is "Baba." Hassan's first word is "Amir." They are nursed by the same woman, creating a bond that Hassan believes is unbreakable. They spend their childhood playing together, flying kites, and exploring Kabul. The Loyalty Hassan is fiercely loyal to Amir. He defends him from bullies, takes the blame for mischief, and never denies him anything. He says, "For you, a thousand times over." Amir, however, takes this loyalty for granted and sometimes abuses it. The Imbalance Despite their closeness, there is an imbalance. Amir is the master's son, Hassan the servant's son. Amir never introduces Hassan to his other friends. He reads to Hassan but teases him about his illiteracy. The friendship is genuine but unequal.

The Betrayal

The Betrayal The Witness Amir watches Assef rape Hassan and does nothing. He runs away. The betrayal is the ultimate violation of their bond. Hassan knows Amir saw, but he never accuses him. The Aftermath Hassan's loyalty remains intact. He confesses to theft to protect Amir. He leaves without revealing the truth. The friendship is destroyed, but Hassan's love endures. The Legacy Years later, Amir learns that Hassan is his half-brother. The bond is deeper than he knew. He rescues Hassan's son, Sohrab, as a way to honor that bond. The love that was broken is partially restored through Sohrab.
