The Two Sons

The Two Sons The Legitimate Son Amir is Baba's legitimate son, but he feels he does not measure up. He is bookish and sensitive, not the son Baba wanted. The Illegitimate Son Hassan is Baba's illegitimate son, but he possesses the qualities Baba admires: loyalty, bravery, and athleticism. Baba loves him but cannot acknowledge him. The Guilt Baba's guilt over his secret drives him to be harsh on Amir and generous to Hassan. He builds an orphanage and helps the poor as a way to atone. His legacy is complicated.

The Legacy Continues

The Legacy Continues The Revelation Amir learns the truth and must reconcile with Baba's legacy. He sees that Baba was a flawed man trying to do good. The Adoption Amir adopts Sohrab, continuing Baba's legacy of caring for family. He tells General Taheri the truth, openly acknowledging Hassan as his brother. The New Father Amir becomes a father figure to Sohrab. He is determined to be a better father than Baba was. The cycle of guilt and secrecy is broken.
