The False Letter

A Treacherous Gift The Letter from Villeroy D'Artagnan receives a letter purportedly from his friends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, who are at Villeroy. The letter says they are sending him a dozen bottles of Anjou wine. D'Artagnan, delighted, plans a dinner with his fellow Guardsmen. The Poisoned Wine Before the dinner, the wine is decanted by Brisemont, a soldier whom d'Artagnan had previously spared. Brisemont drinks the lees and dies in agony. The wine was poisoned, intended for d'Artagnan. The Investigation D'Artagnan realizes that the letter was a forgery and that Milady is behind the attempt. He and his friends investigate, but the trail leads nowhere. The incident heightens their vigilance and confirms that Milady will stop at nothing to kill d'Artagnan.
