Illness and Isolation

The Ailing Lawyer Heart Trouble Dr. Huld suffers from a heart condition that confines him to bed. He works alone, having dismissed his assistants. His illness symbolizes the court's draining effect on those who serve it. Dependence on Leni Leni cares for him, but he is also dependent on her for contact with the outside world. He uses his illness to manipulate clients, as seen with Block. His decline is both physical and moral.

Loss of Client

The Final Blow K.'s Defection When K. dismisses him, Dr. Huld is visibly shaken. He tries to retain control by humiliating Block, but K. is unmoved. The lawyer's power is shown to be illusory. Continued Existence Dr. Huld remains in his sickbed, still connected to the court. His fate is to continue in his role, perhaps until death. He represents the court's inertia and the futility of resistance.
