The Spoiled Child

He and his sister Isabella are pampered and protected from the harsh realities of the moors. First Encounter with Catherine Edgar first sees Catherine when she is bitten by the Lintons' dog. He is immediately captivated by her beauty and spirit. Despite her wildness, he is drawn to her. Courtship Edgar visits Wuthering Heights, enduring Hindley's hostility and Heathcliff's contempt. He is patient and persistent, winning Catherine's hand. He represents civilization and stability, in contrast to Heathcliff's wildness.

Marriage and Jealousy

The Unhappy Husband A Happy Beginning Edgar and Catherine have a period of happiness. He dotes on her, and she is affectionate. But her moods and her attachment to Heathcliff create tension. Edgar is jealous but tries to hide it. The Quarrel When Heathcliff returns, Edgar tries to ban him from the house. Catherine's defiance leads to a violent argument. Edgar is humiliated when Catherine locks him in the kitchen with Heathcliff. He strikes Heathcliff but is physically overmatched. Catherine's Illness Edgar is devastated by Catherine's illness. He nurses her devotedly, but she dies in childbirth. He is left a widower with a newborn daughter, his heart broken.

A Life of Seclusion

The Grieving Father Raising Cathy Alone Edgar devotes himself to his daughter, Cathy. He becomes a recluse, avoiding society and Heathcliff. He finds solace in his love for Cathy and in visits to Catherine's grave.
