A Neglected Childhood

The Unfledged Dunnock Orphaned and Abandoned Hareton's mother dies when he is an infant, and his father Hindley descends into drink. He is raised by Nelly until she leaves, then falls under Heathcliff's control. He is never taught to read or write. Deliberate Degradation Heathcliff deliberately keeps Hareton ignorant and rough, saying he will make him as crooked as another tree with the same wind. Hareton grows up swearing and violent, but with a core of good nature. First Meeting with Cathy When Cathy first meets Hareton at thirteen, she treats him with contempt. He is hurt but drawn to her.
