Marghanita Boulevard

Marghanita Boulevard is a central thoroughfare in the unnamed city where Alex and his droogs begin their evening of ultra-violence. It is the first street they walk down after leaving the Korova Milkbar, and it immediately leads them to their first victim, the old professor from the Public Biblio. The boulevard is described as a "big winter nochy" setting, cold and dry, with few pedestrians—a typical nightscape in a city where the young rule the dark and the older bourgeois stay indoors. Later in the story, after Alex has been released from prison and subjected to the Ludovico Technique, he walks down Marghanita Boulevard again, this time alone and desperate, heading toward the Public Biblio to find a way to kill himself. The boulevard thus marks both the beginning of Alex's criminal career and the low point of his conditioned helplessness. In the final chapter, Alex and his new droogs—Len, Rick, and Bully—walk down Marghanita Boulevard once more, now in a changed fashion era, and they encounter a starry old man leaving a news-kiosk, whom Bully attacks on Alex's orders. The boulevard is a recurring setting that anchors the novel's cyclical structure: each return to it signals a new phase in Alex's life, from youthful violence to conditioned passivity to a weary, ambiguous maturity.
