Origin and Theft

Harold and Janet Chasse gave Lois the diamond-cluster earrings as a Christmas present. Lois kept them in a small china dish on her bedroom bureau, alongside her engagement ring and ivory cameo, because looking at them cheered her up. During a tense breakfast visit in which Harold and Janet tried to pressure Lois into moving to Riverview Estates, Janet slipped into the bedroom, scooped the earrings from the dish, and crammed them into the left front pocket of her jeans. Lois, already distressed by the confrontation and by Dr. Litchfield's breach of confidentiality, did not witness the theft but sensed it through the changing colors of Janet's aura. When Janet later claimed the earrings were missing, she used their absence as evidence that Lois was suffering a "premature decline in cognition" and needed institutional care.

Atropos, the rogue agent of the Random, acquired the earrings after Janet's theft. He wore them as ornaments in his own earlobes, treating them as souvenirs of his interference in Short-Time lives. Ralph first glimpsed the earrings on Atropos when the creature confronted him and Lois in Strawford Park, wearing Bill McGovern's Panama hat and a rusty scalpel. Recovery and Use as a Weapon

During the struggle in Atropos's den, Lois spotted her earrings in a mirror and attacked Atropos, biting his wrist and shoving him against the archway. Ralph pinned the creature down and ripped the earrings from his ears, tearing the minute holes in the lobes into small flaps and drawing blood. He then used one of the earrings as a weapon against the Crimson King, driving the sharp prong into the entity's eye when it appeared in the guise of his mother and then as a monstrous catfish. The earring's point pierced the illusion, allowing Ralph to escape the Court of the Crimson King and return to the airplane cockpit. After the confrontation, Ralph returned the earrings to Lois, who put them in her dress pocket. Later, a mysterious "green man" appeared to Lois in Strawford Park and instructed her to give the earrings back to Ralph, warning him to be careful of the sharp prongs.
