Rémy Legaludec
Rémy Legaludec is the French manservant of Sir Leigh Teabing, the British Royal Historian, living at Château Villette. He is a slender, elegant man who dresses in a tuxedo and performs his duties with a polished, if resentful, courtesy. Beneath this facade, Rémy is a criminal with a record of petty theft, including a conviction for rewiring phone jacks to get free service, and he suffers from a severe peanut allergy that requires an emergency tracheotomy. He was recruited by the Teacher, the anonymous mastermind of the plot to obtain the Priory of Sion's keystone, because his position gave him access to Teabing's extensive Grail research and the comings and goings of the estate. Rémy's motivation is purely financial: the Teacher promised him one-third of twenty million euro, enough to disappear forever and live a life of leisure on the Côte d'Azur.
Role in the Conspiracy
Rémy's primary function is to serve as the Teacher's eyes and ears inside Château Villette. He operates a sophisticated surveillance listening post hidden in the barn's hayloft, equipped with high-capacity hard disk audio recording systems and foil-like photocell microphones. This system eavesdrops on prominent figures, including Jacques Saunière, the curator of the Louvre. Rémy also physically plants bugs; for instance, he inserts a listening device into the robotic knight that Saunière brings to a dinner at Château Villette. When Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu arrive at the estate with the keystone, Rémy is the one who alerts the Teacher and later frees the captured monk Silas, cutting his bonds with a wine-opener blade and handing him a loaded Heckler Koch pistol. He then accompanies Silas to the Temple Church, where he reveals himself by aiming a Medusa revolver at Teabing's head, forcing Langdon to surrender the cryptex.
Betrayal and Death
After the keystone is secured, Rémy drives the Jaguar limousine to St. James's Park, following the Teacher's instructions. The Teacher, who is actually Teabing, joins him in the front seat. Believing his partnership with the Teacher is secure, Rémy accepts a flask of cognac. The drink is laced with peanut powder, triggering a fatal anaphylactic reaction. As Rémy's throat swells and he chokes, the Teacher calmly takes the keystone and the Medusa revolver, then leaves him to die in the car. Rémy's body is later discovered, and his death is attributed to an allergic reaction, eliminating the only person who could directly link Teabing to the crimes. His fingerprints, found throughout Château Villette and the listening post, become a key piece of evidence for the police, but he is beyond interrogation.
