Uglúk
Uglúk, the captain of the fighting Uruk-hai of Isengard, is the most formidable and ruthless orc-commander encountered by the Company of the Ring. He leads the band that captures Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took after the breaking of the Fellowship, drives them across Rohan in a forced march of exceptional speed and cruelty, and is ultimately killed by Éomer, the Third Marshal of the Mark, at the very border of Fangorn Forest. His role in the narrative is that of a brutal, efficient, and ambitious servant of Saruman, whose actions set in motion the chain of events that leads to the Ents' awakening and the fall of Isengard.
Identity and Command
Uglúk is a large, powerful orc, distinct from the smaller breeds that serve Mordor. He commands the Uruk-hai, a breed of orc that can endure sunlight, and he wears the badge of the White Hand of Isengard. He is fiercely loyal to Saruman, whom he calls "the Wise, the White Hand," and he asserts his authority over other orc-leaders, such as Grishnákh of Mordor, with brutal force. When Grishnákh questions his orders, Uglúk decapitates two of his opponents without hesitation, declaring, "I am Uglúk. I have spoken." He is a harsh disciplinarian, driving his own troops and the Northern orcs with whips and threats, and he is utterly focused on his mission: to bring the hobbits alive to Isengard as quickly as possible.
The March Across Rohan
After capturing Merry and Pippin, Uglúk takes command of the entire orc-band, overriding the objections of the Northerners and the Mordor-orcs. He forces the prisoners to run at a grueling pace, giving them a burning draught to keep them moving and using a whip to remind them of the cost of lagging. He heals Merry's head-wound with orc-medicine to ensure he can travel. Uglúk's leadership is marked by a relentless drive for speed, as he correctly fears pursuit by the Riders of Rohan. He leads his force west, down the Stair, across the plains, and towards the forest, constantly shouting orders and quelling dissent. When the Northerners flag in the sunlight, he mocks them as "maggots" and drives them on. He is a cunning strategist, aware of the terrain and the need to reach the cover of Fangorn before the horsemen can overtake them.
The Last Stand and Death
As the Rohirrim surround the orc-band on a hillock near the eaves of Fangorn, Uglúk organizes a desperate defense. He orders the hobbits guarded and tries to hold the position, hoping for reinforcements from Mauhúr in the forest. When Grishnákh attempts to steal the prisoners, Uglúk is occupied with the battle, but his authority is ultimately undermined by the chaos. In the final charge at dawn, Uglúk leads a black wedge of his remaining Uruk-hai in a desperate attempt to break through the Riders and reach the forest. He hews down three horsemen who bar his way, but he is overtaken at the very edge of Fangorn. There, Éomer, the Third Marshal of the Mark, dismounts and fights him sword to sword, slaying him. His death marks the end of the raid, and no news of it ever reaches Mordor or Isengard.
Narrative Role and Significance
Uglúk serves as a primary antagonist in the first half of The Two Towers, embodying the brutal, efficient, and ambitious evil of Saruman's forces. His relentless pursuit and capture of Merry and Pippin directly leads to their escape into Fangorn Forest, where they meet Treebeard and awaken the Ents. This, in turn, results in the destruction of Isengard and the downfall of Saruman. Uglúk's character is a study in orc-leadership: he is a capable commander, a ruthless disciplinarian, and a loyal servant, but his ambition and cruelty are ultimately self-defeating. His death at the hands of Éomer, a man he had mocked as a "Whiteskin," is a fitting end for a creature who lived by the sword and died by it. The token he dropped—Pippin's elven-brooch—becomes a crucial clue for Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli in their pursuit, proving that the hobbits were alive and had left a deliberate sign.
