Mme. de Sable

Mme. de Sable is one of the ladies-in-waiting attending Queen Anne of Austria in her apartments at the Louvre. She appears in a single scene, during which the queen, surrounded by her women, is read to aloud. The group includes Mme. de Guitaut, Mme. de Montbazon, and Mme. de Guemene, as well as the Spanish companion Donna Estafania. Mme. de Sable is present when King Louis XIII enters unexpectedly, interrupting the reading and announcing that the chancellor will visit the queen to communicate certain matters. She witnesses the queen's distress and the subsequent confrontation with the chancellor, who demands the queen's letter. Her role is entirely passive; she is part of the queen's intimate circle but does not speak or act independently in the narrative. Her presence underscores the queen's isolation and the constant surveillance under which she lives, as even her trusted ladies cannot protect her from the king's and the cardinal's intrusions. Mme. de Sable's character is flat, defined solely by her position as a lady-in-waiting, and she serves to populate the queen's chamber and to highlight the tension of the scene.
