Hammer-Heads

The Hammer-Heads are a peculiar and hostile race encountered by Dorothy and her companions on their journey to the South Country. They are defined by their complete lack of arms and their ability to use their heads as powerful, spring-loaded weapons, making them a formidable obstacle on the path to Glinda the Good Witch.

Appearance and Nature

The Hammer-Heads are short and stout, with a big head that is flat at the top and supported by a thick neck full of wrinkles. Their most striking feature is their complete lack of arms, a detail that initially leads the Scarecrow to believe they are harmless. However, this assumption is quickly proven wrong. The Hammer-Heads possess the unique ability to shoot their heads forward with lightning speed, stretching their necks to strike an intruder with the flat top of their head, sending them tumbling backward down the hill. Hundreds of these creatures are found on the hillside, one behind every rock, and they laugh boisterously at the misfortune of those they repel.

The Encounter on the Hill

As the travelers attempt to cross a steep hill covered with great pieces of rock, they are confronted by a Hammer-Head who declares, "This hill belongs to us, and we don't allow anyone to cross it." When the Scarecrow insists they must pass, the Hammer-Head demonstrates his power by striking the Scarecrow in the middle and sending him tumbling down the hill. The Cowardly Lion, angered by the laughter at his friend's mishap, charges up the hill, only to be struck by another Hammer-Head's head and sent rolling down as if hit by a cannon ball. The Lion concedes that it is useless to fight people with shooting heads, as no one can withstand them.

Defeat and Significance

The Hammer-Heads' prohibition proves insurmountable for the travelers until Dorothy uses the Golden Cap for the third and final time to summon the Winged Monkeys. The Winged Monkeys carry the entire party over the hill, and as they pass overhead, the Hammer-Heads yell with vexation and shoot their heads high in the air, but they cannot reach the flying monkeys. This encounter forces Dorothy to use the last of the Golden Cap's power, a significant turning point that leads directly to her meeting with Glinda. The Hammer-Heads thus serve as a final, absurdly physical barrier that underscores the necessity of magical aid and the limits of conventional courage and strength.
