Eaglet

The Eaglet is one of the many birds and animals that tumble into the pool of tears alongside Alice, joining the dripping, cross, and uncomfortable party that assembles on the shore. Though the Eaglet speaks only a few lines, each utterance carries a distinctive note of irreverent common sense that cuts through the pretensions of the other creatures, marking it as a minor but memorable voice of skeptical clarity in Wonderland.

Identity and Introduction

The Eaglet first appears among the crowd of creatures that have fallen into the pool of tears—a Duck, a Dodo, a Lory, and several other curious animals—all of whom swim to the shore after Alice leads the way. When the Dodo solemnly rises to its feet and moves "that the meeting adjourn, for the immediate adoption of more energetic remedies," the Eaglet is the one who interrupts, saying "Speak English! I don't know the meaning of half those long words, and, what's more, I don't believe you do either!" The Eaglet then bends down its head to hide a smile, and some of the other birds titter audibly. This moment establishes the Eaglet as a creature unwilling to be impressed by pompous language and willing to call out nonsense directly.

Role in the Queen's Croquet-Ground and the Trial

The Eaglet reappears in the grand procession that crosses the Queen's Croquet-Ground. Among the ten courtiers ornamented all over with diamonds who walk two and two, and the ten royal children ornamented with hearts who come jumping merrily along hand in hand, the Eaglet is listed among the guests—mostly Kings and Queens—that follow. Later, during the chaotic croquet game, the Queen never leaves off quarrelling with the other players and shouting "Off with his head!" or "Off with her head!" about once a minute. Those she sentences are taken into custody by the soldiers, who must leave off being arches to do this, so that by the end of half an hour or so there are no arches left and all the players except the King, the Queen, and Alice are in custody and under sentence of execution. The Eaglet, as one of the players, is thus among those condemned. At the trial of the Knave of Hearts, the Queen insists "Sentence first—verdict afterwards," and when Alice loudly declares "Stuff and nonsense! The idea of having the sentence first!" the Queen turns purple and shouts "Off with her head!" at the top of her voice. Nobody moves. Alice, having grown to her full size, retorts "Who cares for you? You're nothing but a pack of cards!" The Eaglet is present in the court as part of the crowd, witnessing this final confrontation.

Thematic Significance

The Eaglet functions as a barometer of Wonderland's absurdity: its first appearance punctures the Dodo's bureaucratic language with plain speech, and its later presence among the condemned players illustrates how the Queen's arbitrary violence spares no one, not even the most sensible creatures. In the sister's final dream, the Eaglet's shriek is one of the sounds that fills the air, mixed with the rattling of teacups, the Queen's shrill cries, the sneeze of the pig-baby, the squeaking of the Lizard's slate-pencil, the choking of the suppressed guinea-pigs, and the distant sobs of the Mock Turtle—a cacophony that the sister knows will change, when she opens her eyes, to the confused clamor of a busy farm-yard, with the lowing of cattle replacing the Mock Turtle's heavy sobs. The Eaglet's voice, like all the others, belongs irrecoverably to the dream.
