The Pattern
The Relief
Hungry Joe finishes his missions and packs his bags. He is happy. He gives a party. Then he goes to sleep and has screaming nightmares.
The Return to Combat
When Cathcart raises the missions, Hungry Joe is back on combat status. The nightmares stop. He is terrified but functional.
The Inversion
Hungry Joe is only calm when he is in danger. Peace terrifies him. His psyche is warped by the war.

The Final Nightmare
The Dream
Hungry Joe dreams that Huple's cat is sleeping on his face, suffocating him. He wakes to find the cat actually on his face.
The Struggle
He tries to shoot the cat. Yossarian intervenes. They have a fair fight. Hungry Joe wins, but the cat returns.
The Death
Later, Hungry Joe dies in his sleep. The cat is found on his face. He is killed by his own nightmare. His death is absurd and pathetic.
