The Monitor Comes Out

The Monitor Comes Out
Ender Wiggin is taken to a clinic where the monitor in his neck is removed in a procedure that nearly stops his heart. He returns to school with a bandage and a feeling that something essential has been taken from him.
Context
The monitor has been watching through Ender's eyes since birth, and its removal is the final test of his fitness for the International Fleet. The adults have orchestrated this moment to see how he behaves without surveillance.
Significance
The removal exposes Ender to the cruelty of children like Stilson and marks the end of his ordinary life. It is the first step on the road that leads from a threatened Third child to the savior of humanity.
Graff's Recruitment

Graff's Recruitment
Colonel Hyrum Graff appears at the Wiggin home and interviews Ender about his savage beating of Stilson, then reveals that the fight was part of Ender's testing. He offers Ender a place in Battle School.
Context
Ender has spent a sleepless night haunted by his own violence and by Peter's threats. Graff uses Ender's fear of Peter and his desire to escape to persuade him to volunteer.
Significance
The recruitment seals Ender's destiny. He leaves Earth believing he is saving humanity, but in fact he is being shaped to become a weapon the adults will aim at the buggers.
Shuttle to Battle School

Shuttle to Battle School
Ender boards the shuttle with other recruits and immediately becomes the target of Graff's deliberate favoritism. The other boys hate him, and one attacks him in null gravity; Ender breaks the attacker's arm.
Context
Graff has been ordered to isolate Ender from the other children so he will remain creative and aggressive. The broken arm is another test, and Graff quietly approves.
Significance
The shuttle incident establishes the pattern of Ender's whole career: he is always surrounded by enemies, always forced to fight alone, and always punished for his own acts of self-defense.
Command of Dragon Army

Command of Dragon Army
After four years of isolated brilliance, Ender is made commander of a new Dragon Army made of untrained Launchies and rejects. He begins to create a revolutionary style of null-gravity warfare.
Context
Graff and Major Anderson have intentionally given Ender an untested army and forbidden trades. They want to see whether he can build a fighting force from nothing.
Significance
Dragon Army becomes the vehicle for Ender's tactical ideas: the enemy's gate is down, the use of legs as shields, five flexible toons, and total trust between commander and soldiers. It also becomes a machine that the teachers will deliberately overload.
The Real Third Invasion

The Real Third Invasion
Ender's final simulation places him against an impossible bugger fleet protecting a planet. He orders his entire remaining force to attack the planet with Dr. Device, and the planet explodes.
Context
Mazer Rackham then reveals that every 'simulation' since Ender arrived on Eros has been real: he has commanded actual human fleets in the Third Invasion, and the planet he just destroyed was the bugger homeworld.
Significance
The revelation shatters Ender. He has committed xenocide while believing he was playing a game, and this trauma becomes the foundation of his later life and his work as Speaker for the Dead.
The Speaker Departs

The Speaker Departs
Valentine convinces Ender to leave Eros and join the First Colony, where he can be free from Peter's political ambitions. Ender accepts, planning to use the voyage to understand the buggers he destroyed.
Context
Eros has become a staging ground for colonists, and Ender is both worshipped and dangerous. Valentine has already sabotaged Peter's plan to use Ender as a puppet.
Significance
The departure ends Ender's military life and begins his long wandering as Speaker for the Dead, carrying the Hive-Queen's Cocoon and searching for a world where she can awaken.
