Atropos kills Bill McGovern

Atropos kills Bill McGovern, Ralph Roberts's downstairs neighbor and friend, in the corridor of Derry Home Hospital shortly after Ralph and Lois Chasse witness the advanced decay of McGovern's life-cord. The murder is a direct act of revenge against Ralph for interfering with Atropos's torment of the stray dog Rosalie, and it demonstrates the bald doctor's ability to strike at Ralph through those he cares about, fulfilling a threat to "fuck your friends over."

The Condition of McGovern's Aura

When Ralph and Lois arrive at the hospital on Tuesday evening, they immediately see that McGovern's aura has turned totally black. The stump of what had once been a balloon-string juts stiffly up from it, a decaying remnant of a crude amputation. Ralph has a momentary, almost hallucinatory image of McGovern's eyes bulging and popping out of their sockets, knocked loose by a flood of black bugs. Lois, in her heightened state of perception, inadvertently touches McGovern while trying to get his attention; her hand passes into the murk surrounding him, and she feels the rot inside him, sensing that there are things eating him alive and that they are aware of her presence. She recoils in horror, her own aura turning bright red with jagged black streaks. Ralph realizes that nothing can be done for McGovern; the damage is already done.

The Circumstances of the Death

McGovern is at the hospital to sit with his dying friend and former department head, Bob Polhurst. After Ralph and Lois leave the ICU floor, McGovern and a friend, Mr. Plum, step out of Polhurst's room, clearly giving up the deathwatch for another night. McGovern is walking slowly, lagging behind. Halfway to the elevator, he stops, braces himself against the wall with one hand, and lowers his head, looking like a totally blown runner at the end of a marathon. Mr. Plum does not immediately notice that McGovern has stopped. Ralph, watching this scene through a blue-green arc of light conjured by Lachesis, sees McGovern put one hand to his chest and the other to his throat, rubbing it as if checking for wattles. His eyes look frightened. McGovern then crumples slowly to the floor.

The Motive and the Agent

Ralph immediately understands that this is not a natural heart attack but a murder. He remembers Atropos's threat after Ralph drove him away from Rosalie: "I'll fuck you over, Shorts. I'll fuck you over big-time. And I'll fuck your friends over." Ralph realizes that Atropos has taken McGovern's Panama hat as a souvenir, and that the bald doctor's ability to take such tokens is a sign of his lethal influence. Ralph confronts Clotho and Lachesis, accusing them of being responsible for McGovern's death because their manipulation of Ralph and Lois drew Atropos's attention. Lachesis confirms that Atropos is what happened to McGovern, but insists that the death was not accidental; it was a deliberate act by the rogue agent of the Random. Ralph's anger is fueled by the knowledge that McGovern was killed simply to punish Ralph for meddling in "long-time business."

The Aftermath and Significance

McGovern's death is a pivotal turning point for Ralph. It strips away any remaining illusion that he and Lois are merely observers in a cosmic drama; they are active participants whose choices have lethal consequences for those around them. The murder hardens Ralph's resolve and deepens his hatred for Atropos, transforming his mission from one of abstract duty into a personal vendetta. It also severs one of Ralph's last ties to his ordinary life on Harris Avenue, pushing him further into the secret city of auras and the conflict between the Purpose and the Random. The loss of McGovern, a man who was both a friend and a source of cynical, grounding commentary, leaves Ralph more isolated and more determined to see his task through to the end.
