The Queenfish is a shape-shifting, malevolent entity that appears to Ralph Roberts during his final confrontation with the Crimson King, manifesting as a grotesque catfish and briefly taking the form of Ralph's deceased mother. It serves as a terrifying intermediary, embodying the Crimson King's power and attempting to paralyze Ralph with childhood trauma before being defeated by Ralph's courage and the power of Lois Chasse's earring.

Identity and Manifestation

The Queenfish is not a separate being but a specific, terrifying form assumed by the entity Ralph knows as the Crimson King. When Ralph, having entered the Court of the Crimson King, refuses to be swayed by the entity's initial disguise as his mother, Bertha Roberts, the creature sheds its human appearance. It transforms into a monstrous catfish, a form drawn directly from Ralph's most traumatic childhood memory: the day he hooked a huge catfish from the Kenduskeag River in the Barrens, which clamped its bleeding mouth onto his fingers and refused to let go. This Queenfish retains the housedress of Ralph's mother, creating a grotesque hybrid of maternal familiarity and piscine horror. Its skin becomes rough and scaly, its mouth droops into a sneer, and its eyes slide to the sides of its head, just as the fish of his memory had done. The entity itself acknowledges the shape-changing, stating, "I be the Queenfish! I be loud and I be proud! I got the walk and I got the talk! Actually, I can be whatever I want."

The Confrontation and Psychological Attack

The Queenfish's primary weapon is psychological terror, specifically the resurrection of Ralph's childhood trauma. It leans toward him, its thick lips quivering, and speaks in a voice that blends the nagging tone of his mother with the alien menace of the catfish. It attempts to paralyze him by invoking the old fear that catfish whiskers are poisonous, a story his brother Johnny had told him to scare him. "Don't move so much as a single muscle, Ralph," it warns. "You'll probably die in the explosion no matter what level you're on – the shockwaves travel here just as they do in any building – but that death will still be a great deal better than my death." The Queenfish also reveals its connection to the Crimson King's larger plan, stating its intention to ensure Ed Deepneau's mission succeeds and that the boy Patrick Danville dies. It tries to hold Ralph in place with a deathbag of red light, a web woven from his sickest fears.

Defeat and Significance

Ralph overcomes the Queenfish not by matching its supernatural power, but by confronting his own fear. He remembers that the story of poisonous whiskers was a lie told by a frightened older brother. He reaches out with his right hand, which conceals the sharp prong of Lois Chasse's diamond earring. As the Queenfish flinches, Ralph drives the earring into one of its bulging black eyes. The creature emits a terrible buzzing sound and begins to change, its form rippling and dissolving. The Queenfish is revealed to be a mask for the Crimson King himself, who is momentarily stunned and wounded. This act of defiance breaks the psychological hold of the entity, allowing Ralph to trigger the booby-trap planted in his arm by Clotho and Lachesis, a burst of green energy that banishes the Crimson King from the immediate confrontation. The Queenfish thus represents the Crimson King's most intimate and cruel tactic: using a man's deepest personal horror as a weapon, a strategy that ultimately fails against the strength of Ralph's will and the love represented by Lois's gift.
