The Seventh Kingdom is the name Edmond Kirsch gives to the planet's newest and fastest-growing kingdom of life—a kingdom composed entirely of non-living technology. In his posthumous presentation, broadcast to hundreds of millions of viewers after his assassination, Kirsch reveals that this emergent kingdom, also called the Technium, has been evolving alongside biological life for decades, obeying the same Darwinian rules of adaptation, competition, and survival of the fittest. The fax machine, he explains, has gone the way of the dodo bird; the iPhone survives only by outperforming its competitors; the Encyclopaedia Britannica, once a cumbersome thirty-two-volume set, sprouted digital feet and expanded into uncharted territory where it now thrives. This is the Cambrian Explosion of the Technium—a burst of innovation happening faster than the human mind can comprehend, with new species of technology born daily, each becoming a tool to create other new technologies.

Origin and Nature

Kirsch's computer model, run on his E-Wave quantum computer, identified the Technium as a kingdom too broad to be called a species, an order, or even a phylum—taxonomically, it constitutes an entirely new kingdom of life. Unlike the six traditional kingdoms (Animalia, Plantae, Protista, Eubacteria, Archaebacteria, Fungi), the Seventh Kingdom is lifeless. Yet its members evolve almost exactly as if they were living: they become gradually more complex, adapt to and propagate in new environments, test new variations, and either survive or go extinct. The model showed that this kingdom had already been quietly growing for decades, and by the year 2000 a tiny black bubble representing it had begun to appear above the swollen blue bubble of humanity. In the blink of an eye, Homo sapiens will become the next page in the flip-book of evolution, and future generations will look back on today's humans the same way modern humans look back at Neanderthal man.
