Jasper at Roke

The Proud Lord's Son The Polite Mockery Jasper, a tall, handsome youth from Havnor, was assigned to guide Ged. He was condescending and polite, which infuriated Ged. He constantly challenged Ged's pride. The Duel of Wills Jasper showed off illusion tricks on Roke Knoll, making Ged feel inadequate. Their rivalry grew, fueled by mutual disdain. Jasper represented everything Ged wanted to surpass.

The Challenge and the Summoning

The Fatal Dare The Summoning of the Spirit Jasper taunted Ged into summoning a spirit from the dead. Ged, driven by pride, attempted the spell, which loosed the shadow. Jasper, terrified, hid his eyes during the catastrophe. The Aftermath Jasper never won his wizard's staff. He left Roke that summer and went to the Island of O to serve as a sorcerer in a lord's household. He was never heard from again in the main story.

Jasper's Obscure End

The Fallen Rival The Irony Ged learned from Vetch that Jasper had become a mere sorcerer in O-tokne, never achieving the greatness he had boasted of. His pride had led him to mediocrity. The Shadow of the Past Jasper's face appeared as one of the forms the shadow took during the final confrontation. He was a symbol of Ged's past arrogance, which he had to overcome.
