Prologue, shortly after the battle at the Wall
Varamyr's True Death
Varamyr Sixskins, a powerful warg and skinchanger, lies dying in a hut north of the Wall. Wounded and abandoned by his followers after the battle, he attempts to seize the body of the spearwife Thistle as his second life. The attempt fails catastrophically; Thistle fights him off, biting out her own tongue, and Varamyr's spirit is cast out. He experiences a final moment of unity with the natural world before his consciousness passes into his wolf pack. As he flees in his new wolf-form, he witnesses Thistle rise again as a wight, her eyes glowing with a cold blue light, a servant of the Others.

Illyrio intends to send Tyrion to Daenerys to serve as her advisor, believing his cunning and knowledge of Westeros will be invaluable. Tyrion, seeing this as a chance for survival and revenge against his sister Cersei, agrees to the plan.
