The Warm Inn The Unwelcome Wizard Ged arrived in Ismay on Iffish and went to the Harrekki inn. The innkeeper politely told him that the town already had a wizard (Vetch) and did not need another. Ged felt the coldness of his doom. The Street Meeting As he walked the streets, he saw a man and a girl he recognized: Vetch and his sister Yarrow. He called out, but Vetch almost attacked him with his staff, mistaking him for the shadow that had taken his form.

The Wizard's House A Home at Last Vetch took Ged to his home, a warm, prosperous house. Ged met Yarrow and Murre, Vetch's brother. He enjoyed a brief respite from his quest, eating good food and sleeping in a real bed. Yarrow's Questions Yarrow, a curious girl, asked Ged about magic and equilibrium. He explained the nature of true names and the balance of power. She brought him a sense of innocence and peace.

The Vigil Vetch's Promise Ged told Vetch everything about his quest. Vetch insisted on accompanying him, saying he would be there to witness the deed. Ged tried to refuse, but Vetch's loyalty was unwavering. The Farewell They left Iffish in Lookfar, with Yarrow watching from the dock. Ged knew he might not return, but he was grateful for the friendship. The voyage to the Open Sea began.
