Ladder

Animal Farm

After the Rebellion, Snowball and Napoleon sent for a ladder and set it against the end wall of the big barn. Snowball climbed up with difficulty, balancing a brush between the knuckles of his trotter, and painted the Seven Commandments in large white letters. The ladder was a mere instrument in this moment of collective achievement, its practical function overshadowed by the solemnity of the law being inscribed. The animals, gazing at the wall, saw only the commandments, not the ladder that made their writing possible.

Months later, in the dead of night, a loud crash woke the animals. They found the same ladder broken in two pieces at the foot of the barn wall, beside the stunned Squealer, a lantern, a paint-brush, and an overturned pot of white paint. Only Benjamin grasped the meaning: the ladder had been used to alter the commandments, and its fracture had betrayed the clandestine operation. The ladder, once a transparent facilitator of revolutionary law, had become a material witness to its perversion. Its shattered form marked the moment when the pigs' rewriting of the commandments—and of history itself—was literally exposed, though the animals failed to act on the revelation.
