The Hunted Man
The Escape
Sirius Black escapes Azkaban, the first to do so. He is a top-security prisoner, believed to have murdered thirteen people. The Ministry of Magic and the public are terrified. He is portrayed as a mad, dangerous criminal.
The Search
Sirius travels to Hogwarts, living as a dog in the Forbidden Forest. He watches Harry, hoping to protect him from Pettigrew. He is seen several times, but no one recognizes him. The Dementors are stationed at the school to catch him.
The Break-In
Sirius breaks into Gryffindor Tower, slashing the Fat Lady's portrait. He is seeking Pettigrew, but he frightens everyone. The school is locked down, and security is tightened. Harry is now convinced Black wants to kill him.

The Innocent Man
The Confrontation
In the Shrieking Shack, Sirius finally tells his story. He was never the traitor; Peter Pettigrew was. He was framed for Pettigrew's fake death. He has been searching for Pettigrew to clear his name and avenge the Potters.
The Proof
When Pettigrew is forced to transform back, Sirius's innocence is proven. Harry believes him. Sirius is no longer a murderer in Harry's eyes, but a victim of betrayal.
The Emotional Release
Sirius embraces Lupin, his old friend. He looks at Harry with hope. He offers Harry a home, saying he is his godfather. The moment is bittersweet, as Sirius is still a fugitive.

The Freedom Flight
The Rescue
After being captured by Snape, Sirius is locked in a tower, awaiting the Dementor's Kiss. Harry and Hermione use the Time-Turner to free Buckbeak and fly him to Sirius's window. Sirius climbs onto the Hippogriff and escapes into the night.
The New Life
Sirius goes into hiding, but he is free. He sends Harry a letter, explaining that he is safe and that he sent the Firebolt. He gives Harry permission to visit Hogsmeade. He also sends Ron a new owl, Pigwidgeon.
The Hope
Sirius's escape opens a future for Harry. He now has a godfather who cares for him. The possibility of living with Sirius after the Dursleys is a dream. Sirius's redemption is complete; he is no longer a criminal, but a hero.
