The Plague Hunt: From Projector to Istanbul

Langdon and Sienna follow the clues from the projector to the Dante death mask, then to Venice and finally to Istanbul in a race to find Zobrist's biological weapon.

Deciphering the Projector

The Map of Hell The Modified Botticelli Langdon activates the projector and sees Botticelli's Map of Hell, altered with letters and a plague doctor. He realizes the code points to Vasari's mural in the Palazzo Vecchio, specifically the hidden words "cerca trova." This is the first major clue. The Connection to Dante Langdon understands that the code is a reference to Dante's Inferno and that the plague is somehow linked to the poet's works. The projector becomes the central artifact of the investigation. The Race Begins With Sienna's help, Langdon deciphers the code and heads to the Palazzo Vecchio, unaware that the Consortium and the SRS team are closing in on them.

The Dante Death Mask

Discovering the Mask The Theft Revealed At the Palazzo Vecchio, Langdon and Sienna learn that the Dante death mask has been stolen. Security footage shows Langdon himself taking the mask the night before, but he has no memory of it. They realize the mask holds the next clue. The Hidden Message After escaping through the Vasari Corridor, Langdon and Sienna find the mask hidden in the Baptistry of San Giovanni. On the back of the mask, they discover a poem written in invisible ink, which points to Enrico Dandolo's tomb in Venice. The Path Forward The poem instructs them to "kneel within the gilded mouseion of holy wisdom" and listen for water. This leads them to St. Mark's Basilica, but eventually to Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

The Venetian Chase

The Search in Venice St. Mark's Basilica Langdon and Sienna travel to Venice, where they visit St. Mark's Basilica to find the tomb of Enrico Dandolo. They realize the "gilded mouseion" is actually St. Mark's, but the tomb is not there. Ettore Vio tells them Dandolo is buried in Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The True Destination Langdon understands that the poem's "sunken palace" refers to the Yerebatan Sarayi cistern in Istanbul, not the Doge's Palace. The plague is hidden there. The Betrayal Jonathan Ferris, who had been helping them, collapses and reveals he is a Consortium agent. Sienna attacks him, and they escape, but the race against time intensifies.

The Cistern Discovery

Entering the Sunken Palace The Concert and the Virus Langdon and Brüder descend into the Yerebatan Sarayi cistern, where a concert of Liszt's Dante Symphony is underway. They realize the virus has been released for a week; the Solublon bag is already dissolved. The Medusa Plinth Following the poem's clue, they find the Medusa head, and Brüder wades into the water to confirm the plaque and the empty tether. The virus is already in the water and air. The Stampede Sienna, who had been hiding in the cistern, causes a panic by shouting in Turkish, leading to a stampede. She escapes, but Langdon chases her. The containment fails.
