The Siege BeginsThe Siege Begins
A Sudden Assault The Attackers Ed Deepneau's radical followers – Charlie Pickering, Frank Felton, and Sandra McKay – drive to High Ridge in a car covered with pro-life stickers. They open fire and throw Molotov cocktails, setting the house on fire. Gretchen Tillbury and another woman are killed instantly. The Women Trapped The women and children flee to the cellar. The bulkhead door is locked from the outside by Sandra McKay. They are trapped as the fire spreads. Helen Deepneau is among them, holding baby Natalie. They believe they are going to die. The Police Response The police arrive in force, but Pickering's gunfire keeps them at bay. Officer Chris Nell is killed. Detective John Leydecker is wounded. The situation is desperate.

The Rescue Going Up a Level Ralph and Lois, guided by Clotho and Lachesis, arrive at High Ridge. They go up to a higher level of perception, becoming invisible to the Short-Time world. They walk through the flames and find the women trapped in the cellar. Breaking the Lock Lois uses her psychic power to break the lock on the bulkhead door. Ralph shoves it open, and the women and children escape into the fresh air. Helen is reunited with Natalie, who has been carried out by Lois. Confronting Pickering Ralph and Lois find Charlie Pickering in the north wing, still firing at the police. Ralph disables him, and they lead the survivors to safety. The rescue is a triumph, but it comes at a cost – High Ridge is destroyed, and two women are dead.
