First Day: Chumming and Waiting

The Orca Sets Sail Departure Brody, Hooper, and Quint leave from Promised Land. Quint's boat is equipped with harpoons, barrels, and a chum slick. Hooper brings a shark cage and a bang stick. The atmosphere is tense. A Blue Shark They catch a blue shark, which Quint kills and uses to attract more sharks. Hooper is disgusted by Quint's methods. The day passes without sight of the great white. Tensions Rise Brody and Hooper argue about the ethics of using a porpoise as bait. Quint mocks Hooper's scientific background. The day ends with no success.

Second Day: First Sighting

The Shark Appears A Brief Encounter Mid-morning, the shark takes a bait and severs the wire leader. It surfaces briefly, showing its massive head. Quint and Hooper are awed. The shark attacks the boat, shaking it violently. Harpoon Strike Quint manages to harpoon the shark, but the fish sounds and pulls the barrel under. The shark returns and attacks again. Quint throws a second harpoon. The shark is now carrying two barrels. Damage to the Boat The shark's attacks cause leaks. Quint and Brody work to keep the boat afloat. The shark continues to circle, refusing to die. They decide to wait it out.

Third Day: Final Battle

The Shark's Last Stand Renewed Attack On the third day, the shark is still alive. It attacks the boat again, causing more damage. Quint harpoons it a third time. The shark is now carrying three barrels, but it still fights. Hooper's Death Hooper insists on going into the shark cage to photograph the shark. The shark attacks the cage, bending the bars, and kills Hooper. Brody and Quint are horrified. Sinking of the Orca The shark rams the boat, causing it to sink. Quint becomes entangled in a harpoon line and is dragged under. Brody is left alone, clinging to a cushion. He watches the shark sink into the depths and swims to shore.
