The Boy on the Raft

A Child's Boredom Begging to Swim Alex Kintner, six, is bored on the beach. His mother refuses to swim with him. He asks to use his rubber raft. She reluctantly agrees, warning him not to go far. The Attack The boy paddles out. The shark rises from below, taking him and the raft in one bite. His legs are severed. He dies instantly. No Witness A nearby father sees a splash but not the shark. The boy's mother realizes he is gone. Panic ensues.

Mother's Grief and Rage

Confrontation at the Station The Newspaper Story Mrs. Kintner reads the Amity Leader, which reveals that a previous attack was covered up. She storms into Brody's office. Accusations She slaps Brody with the newspaper and screams, "You killed Alex!" Brody tries to explain, but she is inconsolable. She collapses in tears. Aftermath Mrs. Kintner is sedated and taken to the hospital. Brody is left with overwhelming guilt. Her accusation haunts him.
