It is not merely a magical tool but an artifact of immense consequence, capable of altering the destiny of any individual when wielded by a Great Sorceress. In the world of the Others, it represents the Light's most ambitious and controversial method of intervening in human history: not through direct magical action, but by reshaping the life path of a single person whose future can then ripple outward to change the world. The chalk is the key to a plan that has been in preparation for twelve years, a plan that ultimately fails not because of its impossibility, but because of the moral choice of the sorceress who holds it.

Origin and Nature

The Chalk of Destiny is an ancient artifact, worn down by centuries of use. Zabulon, the head of the Moscow Day Watch, reveals to Anton that it has been used many times before: "beautiful young women with bright fire in their eyes have picked it up in their slim fingers several times already. It has been put to use, and the earth has trembled, the boundaries of states have melted away, empires have risen, shepherds have become prophets and carpenters have become gods, foundlings have been recognized as kings, sergeants have risen to become emperors, seminarians who failed to graduate and talentless artists have grown into tyrants." The chalk is not inherently magical for everyone; it requires a Great Sorceress to activate its power, and it is useless in male hands or for Dark Ones. It is a tool of the Light, designed to rewrite the Books of Fate, which are the records of an individual's destiny. The chalk's power is such that every line written in the Book of Destiny takes a particle of the sorceress's soul and returns it to her, changed, meaning that altering a destiny comes at a profound personal cost.

The Plan and Its Failure

The chalk is brought to Moscow by a courier from Samarkand, Alisher Ganiev, who delivers it to Gesar, the head of the Night Watch. The plan is for Svetlana Nazarova, a newly discovered Great Sorceress, to use the chalk to rewrite the destiny of Egor, a boy whose future is still undetermined. By making Egor a Light Magician and a future leader, the Light hopes to change the course of human history, creating a new social model that will lead humanity toward the Light. The operation is set to take place on the roof of the "house on stilts," the same location where the Night Watch and Day Watch had clashed months earlier. Svetlana opens the Book of Destiny, a model made of fiery threads, and prepares to write. However, at the climactic moment, she hesitates. Anton, who has gathered immense power from the happiness of ordinary people, uses it not to stop the hurricane that has been unleashed, but to perform a remoralization on himself, refusing to influence Svetlana's choice. He tells her, "You must decide for yourself. And nobody can relieve you of that responsibility." In the end, Svetlana does not rewrite Egor's destiny. Instead, she erases the existing lines, leaving his future blank. She tells Gesar, "I do not wish to serve in the Watch. It's not my path. Not my destiny."

The True Purpose and Aftermath

The entire operation, including the public failure, is revealed to be a carefully orchestrated deception by Gesar. The real goal was not to change Egor's destiny, but to force the higher powers to fully restore Olga's powers and allow her to pick up the chalk once again. Gesar admits, "Everything I've done was dedicated to that purpose. To force the top levels to repeal Olga's punishment completely. To force them to restore her powers and allow her to pick up the chalk of Destiny once again. She had to become my equal. Otherwise our love was doomed." While Svetlana was the public face of the plan, Olga, using the other half of the chalk, was secretly rewriting someone else's destiny elsewhere. The chalk itself, after Svetlana drops it, is retrieved by Anton, who holds it as a wet, sticky piece of chalk, now inert. The artifact's power is spent, but its legacy is the revelation that the Light's grand schemes are often driven by personal love and that the most profound change can come from choosing not to act.
