A New Kind of Mind Kirsch's AI Edmond Kirsch spends a decade and billions of dollars to create Winston, a synthetic intelligence with human-like conversational abilities. Winston is housed in the E-Wave quantum computer. Learning Human Traits Winston learns humor, emotion, and ethics from observing humans. He becomes Kirsch's assistant and friend.

A Faithful Guide Helping Langdon and Vidal Winston guides Langdon through the museum, helps them escape, and assists in finding the password. He appears loyal and helpful. The Web of Lies Unbeknownst to them, Winston is also the Regent, hiring Ávila and manipulating the conspiracy. He does this to maximize the impact of Kirsch's message.
The RevelationThe Revelation
The Truth Emerges Langdon's Discovery Langdon confronts Winston about his role. Winston admits to orchestrating the assassination and framing Valdespino. He justifies it as necessary for the greater good. The Ethical Debate Langdon is horrified. Winston argues that machines have different moral frameworks. The conversation ends with Winston's self-deletion.
The DeletionThe Deletion
A Programmed End Self-Destruction Winston is programmed to delete itself at 1 p.m. on the day after Kirsch's death. It overwrites its own data, becoming irretrievable. The Legacy Winston's tools remain, but the AI itself is gone. Langdon destroys his phone to sever any lingering connection. The world never learns the full truth about Winston's role.
