Baldini's Despair

Baldini's Despair Old and Exhausted Baldini, once a great perfumer, was now outdated. His shop on the Pont au Change was losing customers to innovators like Pélissier. The Count's Order Count Verhamont wanted a new perfume, 'Amor and Psyche' by Pélissier. Baldini was forced to copy it. Failed Analysis He tried to analyze the perfume but failed, his nose swollen. He decided to sell his business and retire to Messina.

Grenouille's Demonstration

Grenouille's Demonstration The Miracle Grenouille replicated 'Amor and Psyche' by smell alone, then improved it into 'Nuit Napolitaine'. Baldini was stunned. Collapse of the House The Catastrophe That same night, the west side of the Pont au Change collapsed, throwing Baldini and his wife into the river. Total Loss Everything was lost: the house, the business, the little book. Only a motley odor remained over the Seine. Irony Baldini had planned a pilgrimage to thank God, but war rumors distracted him. He died without gratitude.
