The Town's Expectations

The Town's Expectations
The Chambers Family
Chris is judged by his family's reputation. He is assumed to be a thief and a troublemaker, even when he tries to do the right thing. The town's expectations are a cage.
The Lachance Family
Gordon is expected to be like his brother Dennis, but he is not. His parents' grief and focus on Dennis leave him invisible. He must forge his own path.
The Duchamp and Tessio Families
Teddy and Vern are also trapped by their families. Teddy is seen as the son of a 'loony,' and Vern is seen as simple. Their futures are limited by these perceptions.
The Escape

The Escape
Chris's Struggle
Chris fights against the town's expectations by enrolling in college prep courses. He studies hard and eventually goes to university. He escapes the mill town, but not the violence.
Gordon's Success
Gordon becomes a successful writer, a path that seems impossible for a boy from Castle Rock. He uses his stories to transcend his circumstances.
The Others
Teddy and Vern do not escape. They remain in Castle Rock, living out the futures that were predicted for them. The novel suggests that social class is a powerful force, but not insurmountable.
