The JCC

The JCC (Jewish Community Center) in Indianapolis serves as the geographical landmark for the house of Monica, Isaac's ex-girlfriend. It is the site of a vengeful act of vandalism carried out by Isaac and Augustus Waters after Monica ends her relationship with Isaac following his surgery to remove his remaining eye, leaving him blind.

Location and Context

The JCC is located in Indianapolis, Indiana, and is described as being near Monica's house, an "aggressively sterile, two-story house" with a bright green 1990s Pontiac Firebird parked in the driveway. The location is significant as the setting for a cathartic act of rebellion by Isaac and Augustus.

The Egging Incident

After Isaac's surgery and Monica's abandonment, Augustus orchestrates a retaliatory egging of Monica's car. Hazel Grace Lancaster drives the two boys to the location. Augustus instructs Isaac, who is now blind, on how to aim and throw the eggs. Isaac successfully hits the car multiple times, including the taillight and back windshield. During the incident, Monica's mother comes to the door, but Augustus tells her to go back inside, threatening to call the police if she does not. She complies. Hazel takes a photograph of the scene: Augustus, with an unlit cigarette in his mouth, holding the egg carton, his arm around Isaac, whose sunglasses are turned away from the camera, with egg yolks dripping down the car behind them.

Significance

The egging is a symbolic act of defiance against the injustice Isaac feels. It represents a turning point where Isaac, guided by Augustus, reclaims a sense of agency and power in the face of his disability and heartbreak. The JCC, as the landmark for Monica's house, becomes the stage for this act of catharsis and friendship.
