The Warning When the dwarves arrive, Bard is suspicious. He warns the Master that the dragon may be stirred up. His warnings are ignored. The Inheritance Bard is a descendant of Girion, Lord of Dale. He carries the black arrow, a heirloom from his ancestors. This arrow will play a key role.

The Slaying of Smaug

The Dragon's Rampage Organizing the Defense When Smaug attacks, Bard takes charge. He rallies the archers and fights back. He is the last to hold his ground. The Thrush's Message An old thrush whispers to Bard, telling him of Smaug's weak spot. Bard understands the bird's language because of his lineage. The Final Shot Bard fires his last black arrow, striking the bare patch on Smaug's chest. The dragon falls dead. Bard becomes the hero of the hour.

The Claim to Dale

His line continues, and he brings prosperity to the region. His story is one of destiny fulfilled.
