The Deep Magic Claimed

The Law of the Emperor The Witch's Argument The Witch invokes the Deep Magic, the law written on the Stone Table, the World Ash Tree, and the sceptre of the Emperor-Beyond-the-Sea. It states that every traitor belongs to her, and she has a right to kill them. Aslan's Acknowledgment Aslan does not deny the law. He says it is very true. The law is just, and the Witch's claim is valid. The Impasse There seems to be no way out. The children despair. The Witch demands blood. The law must be satisfied.

The Deeper Magic Revealed

The Secret Law Aslan's Explanation Aslan explains that the Witch knew only the Deep Magic from the Dawn of Time. But there is a Deeper Magic from before the dawn of time, which she did not know. It says that when a willing victim who has committed no treachery is killed in a traitor's stead, the Table will crack and death itself will start working backwards. The Victory of Sacrifice Aslan's death is a substitution. He is innocent, but he dies for the guilty. This defeats the Witch's claim and breaks the Stone Table. The Resolution The Deeper Magic supersedes the Deep Magic. The conflict is resolved not by force but by love and sacrifice. This is the central theological point of the story.
