Setting Out from Rivendell The Departure The Fellowship leaves Rivendell in winter. They are well-equipped and guided by Gandalf. The mood is hopeful but solemn. The Attempt on Caradhras They attempt to cross the Misty Mountains via the Redhorn Pass but are thwarted by snow and the mountain's hostility. They turn back and consider the path through Moria. The Decision to Enter Moria Gandalf insists on the Mines of Moria against Aragorn's doubts. The Fellowship enters the dark, dangerous realm of the Dwarves.

Moria and the Fall of Gandalf The Dark Passage The Fellowship travels through the endless tunnels of Moria, constantly in fear of attack. They find the tomb of Balin and learn of the dwarf-colony's end. The Battle in the Chamber of Mazarbul Orcs and a cave-troll attack. The Fellowship fights bravely, but the enemy is numerous. They flee to the Bridge of Khazad-dûm. Gandalf's Sacrifice On the bridge, a Balrog appears. Gandalf confronts it and breaks the bridge, but the Balrog drags him into the abyss. The Fellowship is devastated, and they must continue without their leader.

Lothlórien and Galadriel's Gifts The Arrival in the Golden Wood After Moria, the Fellowship enters Lothlórien, a land of Elves untouched by evil. They are welcomed by Celeborn and Galadriel. The Mirror of Galadriel Galadriel shows Frodo the Mirror, revealing possible futures and the Eye of Sauron. She tests the Fellowship's hearts. The Gifts and Departure Galadriel gives each member gifts, including the Phial of Galadriel to Frodo. The Fellowship leaves by boat, continuing down the Anduin.

The Division at Parth Galen The Debate on the River's Bank The Fellowship reaches Parth Galen, where they must decide their next course. Boromir argues for going to Minas Tirith, while Frodo is torn. Boromir's Attempt on the Ring Boromir, overcome by temptation, tries to take the Ring from Frodo. Frodo escapes and decides to go alone to Mordor. The Fellowship Scatters Frodo leaves with Sam. Merry and Pippin are captured by Orcs. Boromir dies defending them. The Fellowship is broken, and each member follows a separate path.
