Eglarest

Eglarest was one of the two great havens of the Falathrim, the Elves of the western shores of Beleriand, founded and ruled by Círdan the Shipwright. Along with its sister-haven Brithombar to the north, it was the principal dwelling-place of those Sindar who loved the Sea and built the first ships to sail upon it. The city was built where the River Nenning flowed into the Great Sea, its harbor sheltered by the arms of the land and its quays carved from the living rock. For long ages it stood as a beacon of Elvish craft and seamanship, a place of refuge and departure, where the ships of the Falathrim set forth to explore the coasts or to bear tidings between the realms of the Eldar.

Founding and Early History

Eglarest was established in the early years of the First Age, when the Sindar under King Thingol of Doriath first spread westward to the shores of Beleriand. Círdan, who was accounted the greatest mariner and shipwright among the Elves, became the lord of the Falathrim and built his chief havens at Brithombar and Eglarest. The city grew in wealth and power as the centuries passed, its people trading with the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains and with the Noldor who returned to Middle-earth from Valinor. During the long peace of the Siege of Angband, Eglarest remained a center of Elvish culture and a vital link between the kingdoms of Beleriand and the Uttermost West.

The Havens under Siege

With the breaking of the Siege of Angband in the Dagor Bragollach, the shadow of Morgoth fell upon all Beleriand. The Havens of the Falathrim were besieged by Orcs and other creatures of the Enemy, but Círdan and his people held out with the aid of the Noldor. Eglarest became a refuge for survivors of the fallen kingdoms, and its shipyards worked tirelessly to build vessels that might carry the Elves to safety or to war. During the later years of the First Age, the city was repeatedly attacked but never taken, its defenses strengthened by the power of Ulmo, the Lord of Waters, who loved the Falathrim and sent his messengers to counsel them.

The War of Wrath and the City's End

In the final cataclysm of the War of Wrath, when the Host of Valinor overthrew Morgoth and broke the Iron Mountains, the great wave of the Sea swept over the western lands of Beleriand. Eglarest, like all the Havens of the Falathrim, was drowned and destroyed, its towers and quays swallowed by the rising waters. The land where it had stood sank beneath the Great Sea, and only the memory of its beauty remained in the songs of the Elves. Círdan himself survived the ruin and later founded the Grey Havens in Lindon, where he dwelt until the end of the Third Age, still building ships and waiting for the last voyage to the West.

Narrative Significance

Eglarest is never directly visited in the narrative of The Lord of the Rings, but it is part of the deep history that shapes the world. Círdan, the lord of the drowned haven, appears at the Grey Havens in the final chapter, where he greets the Ring-bearers and prepares the white ship that will carry them into the West. The fate of Eglarest—a place of beauty and refuge that was ultimately lost to the sea—echoes the larger theme of loss and passing that pervades the legendarium, and it stands as a symbol of the Elder Days that are gone beyond recall, remembered only in song and story.
