Two-Bit's Introduction

The Wisecracker A Character Sketch Two-Bit Mathews is the oldest of the gang at eighteen and a half, still a junior in high school. He is known for his long sideburns, his switchblade, and his nonstop jokes. He shoplifts for fun and is always smarting off to the cops. His Philosophy Two-Bit sees life as a big joke. He does not take anything seriously, which is his way of coping with a hard life. He is lazy but smart, and he understands people better than he lets on. The Gang's Clown Two-Bit keeps the mood light. He is the one who can make anyone laugh, even in the worst moments. He is an essential part of the gang's dynamic.

Two-Bit's Protective Side

More Than a Joke Defending Johnny When Ponyboy insults Johnny, Two-Bit slaps him hard. He will not tolerate anyone hurting Johnny, even in words. He is protective of the gang members. Common Sense Two-Bit gives Ponyboy advice about life. He says, "The chips are always down when it's our turn, but that's the way things are." He is philosophical beneath the jokes.
