Cherry and Ponyboy's ConnectionCherry and Ponyboy's Connection
A Shared View The First Mention Ponyboy asks Cherry if she watches sunsets. She says she used to before she got too busy. He realizes that they see the same sunset from different sides of town. The Symbol Sunsets are a symbol of the common ground between them. The two worlds are not so different. They both can appreciate beauty. A Bridge This shared experience becomes a silent bond. Later, Ponyboy asks Cherry if she can see sunsets from the West Side. She says yes, and he says the East Side is good too. It is a moment of understanding.
Johnny and the SunsetJohnny and the Sunset
Seeing the World The Dawn Johnny and Ponyboy watch the sunrise from the church. Johnny says, "I never noticed colors and clouds and stuff until you kept reminding me about them." Ponyboy has taught him to see beauty. The Poem Ponyboy recites "Nothing Gold Can Stay" as they watch. The gold of the dawn is fleeting. Johnny grasps the meaning: the world is beautiful, but it does not last. A New Perspective Johnny's newfound appreciation for sunsets is part of his growth. He begins to see the good in the world. The sunset becomes a symbol of hope.
Johnny's Last WishJohnny's Last Wish
Pass It On The Letter Johnny writes to Ponyboy: "I want you to tell Dally to look at one. He'll probably think you're crazy, but ask for me. I don't think he's ever really seen a sunset." The Meaning Johnny wants Dally to see the beauty in the world before it is too late. But Dally dies before he can. The sunset is a metaphor for the gold that Dally never had. Ponyboy's Mission Ponyboy carries on Johnny's wish. He will tell the story, and maybe others will learn to see the sunsets. The novel itself is an invitation to look at the world with fresh eyes.
