Childhood trauma with Coppelius

The Sandman's First Encounter The Family Routine Every evening, Nathaniel's family gathered in his father's study. The father smoked and told wondrous tales, but at nine o'clock the mother would announce the Sandman's arrival, sending the children to bed. Nathaniel's curiosity about the Sandman grew into a consuming obsession. The Revelation Nathaniel hid in his father's study and discovered the Sandman was the repulsive barrister Coppelius. Coppelius and his father performed alchemical experiments, and Coppelius threatened to tear out Nathaniel's eyes. This traumatic event left Nathaniel with a high fever and a lifelong fear. The Aftermath Nathaniel's father later died in an explosion during one of Coppelius's visits. Nathaniel blamed Coppelius for his father's death, and the image of the Sandman became a dark premonition haunting his life.

Reappearance of Coppelius as Coppola

The Return of the Sandman The Barometer Peddler While studying in G., Nathaniel encountered a barometer salesman who he immediately recognized as Coppelius, now calling himself Giuseppe Coppola. The shock of this reappearance reawakened his childhood trauma and plunged him into a state of dark brooding. The Purchase of the Looking-Glass Coppola later returned selling eyeglasses and telescopes. Nathaniel bought a small pocket looking-glass, which revealed Olympia in Spalanzani's window. The looking-glass became a tool that intensified Nathaniel's obsession and delusion. The Impact on Nathaniel's Mind Nathaniel began to believe that dark forces controlled his life. He wrote to his friend Lothar about his determination to confront Coppelius and avenge his father's death. This event marked the beginning of his mental disintegration.

Obsession with Olympia

The Idealized Love The First Glimpse Through the looking-glass, Nathaniel saw Olympia's face clearly for the first time. Her eyes appeared to come alive, and he became transfixed. He forgot Clara and spent hours gazing at Olympia, convinced she was his soulmate. The Courtship Nathaniel attended Spalanzani's party, where Olympia played the piano and sang. Using the looking-glass, he believed she was looking at him with love. He danced with her, spoke passionately, and interpreted her monosyllabic 'Oh, Oh!' as profound understanding. He visited her daily, reading his poetry to her. The Delusion Complete Nathaniel convinced himself that Olympia alone understood him. He ignored Siegmund's warnings that Olympia seemed like a soulless automaton. His love for Clara faded completely, and he decided to propose marriage to Olympia.

Crushing revelation of the automaton

The Shattering of Illusion The Fight Over Olympia Nathaniel rushed to Spalanzani's house and heard a terrible struggle. He burst in to find Spalanzani and Coppola fighting over Olympia. Coppola tore the automaton apart, revealing that Olympia was a lifeless wooden doll with empty eye sockets. The Eyes of the Automaton Spalanzani shouted that Coppola had stolen the eyes, and then threw a pair of bloody eyes at Nathaniel. The sight of the eyes and the destruction of his beloved triggered Nathaniel's complete mental breakdown. The Madness Nathaniel began screaming 'Wooden doll, turn, turn!' and attacked Spalanzani. He was subdued and taken to a madhouse. This event marked the climax of his descent into madness.

Temporary recovery and final tragedy

The False Dawn Recovery at Home Nathaniel woke in his childhood home, cared for by his mother, Clara, and Lothar. He seemed cured and recognized Clara's true love. Plans were made to move to a small country estate. Nathaniel appeared gentle and childlike. The Tower Incident While walking in the market square, Clara suggested climbing the town hall tower. At the top, Nathaniel inexplicably pulled out Coppola's looking-glass and looked at Clara. The sight triggered his madness again. He tried to throw Clara off the tower, shouting 'Turn, little wooden doll, turn!' but Lothar saved her. The Suicide Nathaniel, still raving, saw Coppelius in the crowd below. He screamed 'Eyes a pretty!' and leaped over the parapet, falling to his death on the cobblestones. Coppelius disappeared into the crowd. Nathaniel's tragic fate was sealed.
