Dick Hallorann's Rescue Mission

Receiving the Call

The Psychic Scream The Oranges While driving home from a vegetable market, Hallorann smells oranges, a sign of his shining. He hears Danny's desperate call: "Come! Please come!" The Decision Hallorann immediately decides to go to Colorado. He lies to his boss, claiming his son is in critical condition, to get time off. He feels a strong compulsion to help. The Premonition Hallorann has a premonition that he might not return. He makes a will and leaves it behind. He is willing to risk his life for the boy.

The Flight to Denver

The Storm The Rough Flight Hallorann catches a flight to Denver. The plane encounters a severe snowstorm. The landing is rough, but they arrive safely. The Urgency Hallorann is anxious to reach the Overlook. He rents a car and drives toward Sidewinder, despite the worsening weather. The Determination He is determined to help Danny, no matter the obstacles. His sense of duty and friendship drives him forward.

The Road to Sidewinder

The Perilous Drive The Blizzard Hallorann drives through a blizzard. He nearly goes off the road several times. A snowplow driver, Howard Cottrell, helps him and gives him mittens. The Advice Cottrell warns him that the road to the Overlook is impassable. He suggests renting a snowmobile from Larry Durkin in Sidewinder. The Persistence Hallorann ignores the warnings. He is focused on reaching Danny. He pushes on despite the danger.

The Hedge Lion Battle

The Attack The Ambush As Hallorann approaches the Overlook on a snowmobile, a hedge lion attacks him. It is a living creature of branches and leaves, animated by the hotel's evil. The Fight Hallorann is clawed and bitten. He uses gasoline from the snowmobile's can to set the lion on fire. The creature burns, but Hallorann is injured. The Survival Hallorann's quick thinking saves him. He continues toward the hotel, wounded but determined. The battle shows the hotel's power to manifest outside its walls.

Entering the Overlook

The Confrontation The Lobby Hallorann enters the lobby and sees blood on the stairs. He calls for Danny. Jack, possessed, sneaks up behind him and hits him with the roque mallet, knocking him unconscious. The Second Blow Jack hits Hallorann again, breaking his jaw and cheekbone. Hallorann collapses. The Rescue Attempt Fails Hallorann is incapacitated. He cannot help Danny or Wendy immediately. His rescue mission seems to have failed.

Recovery and Escape

The Aftermath Waking Up Hallorann regains consciousness and finds Wendy. Together, they go to find Danny. They meet him on the stairs as the hotel begins to explode. The Escape Hallorann carries Wendy and Danny out of the hotel. They flee on the snowmobile as the Overlook burns behind them. The Rescue Complete Hallorann's mission is successful. He has saved Danny and Wendy. Despite his injuries, he feels a sense of accomplishment.

Healing and Friendship

The New Bond Recovery Hallorann works as a cook at the Red Arrow Lodge in Maine. Danny and Wendy visit him. He helps Danny cope with the trauma. The Talks Hallorann and Danny talk about the shining and about loss. Hallorann becomes a mentor and father figure to Danny. The Future Hallorann promises to always be there for Danny. Their friendship endures. He has found a new purpose in helping the boy.
