The Departure and Ambushes

A Treacherous Road The Plan D'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis leave Paris separately to avoid detection. They plan to meet in Calais and cross to England. However, the cardinal's agents are waiting for them. The Attacks At Chantilly, Porthos is challenged to a duel by a stranger and is wounded. At Crevecoeur, Aramis is shot in the shoulder. At Amiens, Athos is arrested on false charges of counterfeiting. D'Artagnan, realizing the attacks are coordinated, presses on alone. The Duel with de Wardes At Calais, d'Artagnan encounters the Comte de Wardes, who has a cardinal's pass to cross to England. D'Artagnan fights and kills him, taking the pass. He then boards a ship and reaches London, where he finds Buckingham.

The Meeting with Buckingham

A Desperate Request The Duke's Reaction D'Artagnan presents the queen's letter to Buckingham. The duke, realizing the danger to the queen, immediately agrees to help. He shows d'Artagnan the diamond studs, but two are missing—stolen by Milady. The Jeweler's Task Buckingham summons his jeweler, O'Reilly, and orders him to create perfect replicas of the missing studs within two days. The jeweler is kept prisoner in the palace to ensure secrecy. The replicas are completed just in time. The Return D'Artagnan sets sail for France with the twelve studs. He arrives in Paris just before the ball and delivers them to the queen. The mission is a success, but it has cost his friends dearly.
