Discovery in the Junk Room

The Unexpected Scene K. Hears Sighs While leaving the bank, K. hears sighs from a junk room. He opens the door and finds Franz and Willem about to be whipped by a whip-man. They claim K.'s complaint led to their punishment. The Guards' Plea Willem and Franz beg K. to intercede. K. feels guilty but also believes the punishment is unjust. He tries to bribe the whip-man, but the whip-man refuses, insisting on carrying out his duty. The Flogging Begins Franz screams in pain, and K. fears the noise will attract attention. He shoves Franz, causing him to fall, but the whipping continues. K. closes the door and leaves, disturbed by his inability to stop it.
