The Defeat of the Wicked Witch's Forces

The Wicked Witch of the West sends a series of attacks against the travelers, each repelled by a different companion's unique abilities.

The Wolves Attack

The Witch's First Strike The Silver Whistle The Wicked Witch sees the travelers sleeping in her country. She blows her silver whistle once, summoning a pack of forty wolves. She orders them to tear the strangers to pieces. The Tin Woodman's Stand The Tin Woodman is awake and hears the wolves coming. He tells the others to stay behind him. He takes his sharp axe and chops off the head of each wolf as it approaches. Forty wolves die, and the pile of bodies grows. The Morning After Dorothy wakes up to see the dead wolves. The Tin Woodman explains what happened. She thanks him. They have breakfast and continue their journey. The Witch is furious.

The Crows Attack

The Witch's Second Wave The King Crow The Witch blows her whistle twice, summoning a flock of wild crows. She commands them to peck out the strangers' eyes. The crows fly toward the travelers. The Scarecrow's Defense The Scarecrow tells the others to lie down. He stands alone. The crows are afraid of scarecrows, but the King Crow says he is only stuffed. The King Crow attacks, but the Scarecrow catches it and twists its neck. He then kills each crow one by one. Forty crows lie dead. The Witch's Rage The Witch looks out and sees her crows dead. She is enraged. She stamps her foot, tears her hair, and gnashes her teeth. She then sends the black bees.

The Bees Attack

The Stinging Swarm The Witch's Third Summon The Witch blows her whistle three times, summoning a swarm of black bees. She orders them to sting the strangers to death. The Scarecrow's Strategy The Scarecrow tells the Tin Woodman to take out his straw and cover Dorothy, Toto, and the Lion. The Woodman does so. The bees arrive and find only the Woodman to sting. They break their stings on the tin and die. The bees are defeated. The Witch's Fury The Witch sees the bees in little heaps. She is more angry than ever. She sends her slaves, the Winkies, with spears. But the Lion's roar scares them away. The Witch is now desperate and uses the Golden Cap.

The Winkies' Failed Attack

The Slaves' Fear The Spearmen The Witch summons a dozen of her Winkie slaves and gives them sharp spears. She orders them to go and destroy the strangers. The Lion's Roar The Winkies march toward the travelers. The Lion gives a great roar and springs toward them. The Winkies are terrified and run back as fast as they can. The Witch's Punishment The Witch beats the Winkies with a strap for their cowardice. She then sits down to think. All her plans have failed. She must use the Golden Cap.
