Final Escape in the Maelstrom The Last Chance When the Nautilus was near the coast of Norway, Ned decided to act. He had prepared the skiff. He and Conseil and Aronnax would escape during the night. The Maelstrom As they were about to detach the skiff, the ship was caught in the Maelstrom. The skiff was torn loose, and they were thrown into the whirlpool. They lost consciousness, but miraculously survived.
