A Rainy Morning Illness and Despair The Dreamer wakes up with a fever, the rain weeping against the window. He feels empty and broken. Matrona brings him a letter. The Letter from Nastenka He reads her words: she begs for forgiveness, confesses that she still loves the lodger, and thanks the Dreamer for his love. She says she will treasure his friendship forever. A Bitter Acceptance Tears fall from his eyes. He understands that he has lost her, but he cannot blame her. He resolves to let her go.
