Happy Childhood at the Grange

The Beloved Daughter A Sunbeam in a Desolate House After her mother's death, Cathy grows up as the light of Edgar Linton's life. She is beautiful, spirited, and intelligent, with her mother's dark eyes but her father's fair skin. Edgar educates her himself, and she is content in her secluded world. Innocent Curiosity Cathy longs to explore beyond the park. She is fascinated by Penistone Crags and the moors. Her father, fearing Heathcliff, keeps her away from Wuthering Heights. But her natural curiosity and independence lead her to disobey. First Encounter with Hareton At thirteen, Cathy ventures to the Heights and meets Hareton, now a rough, illiterate young man. She is horrified to learn he is her cousin. She treats him with contempt, but this meeting plants the seeds of future change.

Secret Correspondence with Linton

A Forbidden Romance The Cousin from the South Linton Heathcliff arrives at the Grange after his mother's death. Cathy is delighted to have a playfellow, but Linton is sickly and peevish. Edgar hopes to keep him, but Heathcliff demands his son back. Linton is taken to the Heights. Letters and Lies Despite her father's prohibition, Cathy begins a secret correspondence with Linton, encouraged by Heathcliff's manipulations. She sends books and locks of hair. The letters grow into love letters, though Cathy's feelings are more pity and romance than true love. Discovery and Suppression Nelly discovers the letters and burns them. Cathy is heartbroken but promises to stop. However, Heathcliff's lies about Linton dying for love of her manipulate her into resuming contact. She begins sneaking out to visit him.

Forced Marriage and Imprisonment

The Trap Springs Edgar's Deathbed Edgar Linton is dying. Heathcliff, knowing this, lures Cathy to Wuthering Heights under the pretense of seeing Linton. He locks her in and forces her to marry Linton that night, threatening to keep her prisoner until she complies. A Cruel Honeymoon Cathy is trapped at the Heights with the dying Linton and the brutal Heathcliff. Linton, weak and selfish, refuses to help her escape. Heathcliff treats her with contempt and violence. She is isolated and miserable. Escape and Freedom After Linton's death, Cathy manages to escape and returns to the Grange just in time to see her father alive. He dies peacefully in her arms. She is now a widow, penniless and at Heathcliff's mercy, but she has regained her spirit.

Reconciliation with Hareton

From Enemies to Lovers Life at the Heights After Heathcliff's death, Cathy and Hareton are left at Wuthering Heights. Initially, Cathy is proud and scornful, refusing to acknowledge Hareton as her equal. She mocks his ignorance and his attempts to learn. A Change of Heart Gradually, Cathy's heart softens. She sees Hareton's genuine kindness and his desire to improve himself. She begins to teach him to read, and they bond over books. A kiss seals their reconciliation. A New Beginning Cathy and Hareton fall in love. They plan to marry on New Year's Day and move to Thrushcross Grange. Nelly Dean rejoices, seeing the union as the crown of all her wishes. The cycle of hatred is broken, and peace is restored.
