Servant and Confidante

The Faithful Housekeeper Early Years at the Heights Nelly grows up at Wuthering Heights, nursing the children. She is present at Heathcliff's arrival and becomes a confidante to both Catherine and Heathcliff. She tries to mediate between them and Hindley. Witness to Love and Conflict Nelly hears Catherine's confession of love for Heathcliff and her decision to marry Edgar. She is the one who tells Heathcliff of Catherine's engagement, though he overhears the crucial part himself. She tries to guide Catherine but is often ignored. Move to Thrushcross Grange When Catherine marries Edgar, Nelly accompanies her as housekeeper. She becomes the link between the two households, carrying messages and observing the unfolding drama. Her loyalty is divided between her mistress and her conscience.

Guardian of the Second Generation

The Nurturer Raising Cathy After Catherine's death, Nelly becomes the primary caretaker of young Cathy. She protects her from Heathcliff's influence and tries to instill good values. She is both a servant and a mother figure. Intermediary and Protector Nelly tries to prevent Cathy's secret correspondence with Linton and later accompanies her to the Heights. She is imprisoned with Cathy during the forced marriage. She risks her position to help Cathy escape. The Final Reconciliation After Heathcliff's death, Nelly stays at the Heights to help Cathy and Hareton. She rejoices in their growing love and plans for their wedding.
